WEST AFRICA LESSON PLANS
OVERVIEW: Africa unit is only a week and half long and is worked mostly on an individual basis. Learning goals are passed out and the "before" section is checked off. IEP adjustments marked below.
Geography – Geog. 12-15
Color African areas on world map in front of binder. Pass out individual African map and label and color it as well.
Sub-Saharan Desert + Trade / Slave Trade / Colonization – Hist. 1, 8, 9, 10, Geog. 12-15; Econ. 19-21; Govt. 16
Give instructions and lay out supplies needed for creating a face mask to hang out in hall. Students can create mask after their guided reading is finished for the day. Review powerpoint discussing Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, bartering (demo), trading across the desert, slave trade comparison, and colonization. IEP marks appropriate items onto Africa map from reading assignment above before making mask.
CULTURAL ITEMS: Griots (storytellers) and Anansi the Spider – Hist. 1
Guided reading and worksheet. After reading the story of Anansi, students illustrate it into 4 blocks.
Sample foods (sorghum, yams, peanuts, okra, papaya, cantaloupe) while reviewing for test.
