GETTING INTO THE GAME UNIT LESSON PLANS
OVERVIEW: Geography will be the opening unit for the year and is partly review from previous year. Standards for Geog. # 12, 13, and 15 are used throughout this unit. Geography will also be covered in each civilization’s unit lesson plans. Room will be decorated in a football theme. Alterations for special needs students will be marked as “IEP” in lesson plans.
SYLLABUS PACKET:
Pass out, go over, or take care of the following items:
PRETEST:
Take pretest. Record scores.
CLASSROOM RULES / CONSEQUENCES:
Allow students to list their own rules on one board and consequences on the other board. This allows for more ownership on their part, and is almost always the same each year. Post rules and consequences and go over the final posting during next set of classes.
BINDERS / GEOGRAPHY REVIEW:
Set up binders as follows:
QUIZ:
Quiz on continents, oceans, latitude, longitude, equator, prime meridian. Trade and grade last 10 minutes of class. Pass back to correct person, then take back up. IEP has word bank of continents and oceans for test. IEP does not do problems # 16 - # 20 (15 points possible.) After graded, pass tests back out and explain that this type of test will be given throughout the school year without any prior warning.
FOOTBALLS - anchor activity:
Allow students to create a football frame for picture to go in hallway, when finished with the day’s work. This helps me identify the students while they get enjoyment doing it.
BREAKING DOWN THE STANDARDS / ECONOMICS - Econ. # 19 - 21
Go over students' standards sheets, noting vocab and meanings throughout. Pass out worksheet for cost and benefits. Do 3 Little Pigs chart first, then with a partner work out the costs and benefits on other side of sheet for school clothes. Do specialization and interdependence charts for Bubba Gump and John Deere, together on front side. Work through new chart for early colonies together. Homework of charts on early civilizations and movie theaters. Quiz follow day on analyzing info. Check off standards 19 - 21 on student's sheet.
NEXT PORTION IS OPTIONAL FOR GEOGRAPHY:
GOOGLE MAPS:

TYPES OF ROADS / MILEAGE:
Worksheet on reading types of highways using a map key and map. Worksheets reading mileage from small numbers beside of roads on map, from a mileage chart, and using the actual mileage scale and learning to use directional words while queing into prepositions "from" and "to" (ex. You must travel north from Ironton to Columbus.)
OH / KY MAPS:
